Avinav belongs to a prominent and respected family of North India, owners of The Punjab Kesari Group, publishers of ‘Punjab Kesari’, ‘Navodaya Times’, ‘Jag Bani’ and ‘Hind Samachar’ Newspapers. Avinav has been actively involved in the family business since 2014. Smart and hard working, he has brought in several new and innovative ideas into the organization. He started ‘Punjab Kesari Studios’ and has been involved in improving the photography and videography of the group. He has produced several short films and documentaries. His recent initiative YUM has been widely appreciated.
His grandfather Mr. Vijay Kumar Chopra is the co-founder of the newspaper business and has been responsible for the growth and success of the group. His father Mr. Avinash Chopra and Uncle Mr. Amit Chopra have contributed to therapid growth of the family business within and outside its traditional markets and diversification to other businesses. His mother Mrs. PomilaChopra is a Home-maker.
The group has 14 printing plants in 7 states.The family’s newspapers have a total circulation of 1.2 million copies daily and over 14 million readers. The family is also building a five star hotel in Jalandhar and several other projects in NCR and other places in diversification.
His family is known for its contribution to India’s freedom movement, its commitment to unbiased, fearless and truthful journalism, conservation of press freedom in most trying circumstances and its relentless fight against insurgency and terrorism in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. Avinav’s Grandfather Mr. Vijay Kumar Chopra was awarded the ‘Padma Shree’ for fearless journalism and contribution to press freedom. Mr Vijay Kumar Chopra has headed the Indian Newspaper Society, was twice the Chairman of Press Trust of India, member Press Council of India and has held several other important posts.
LEGACY: Avinav’s Great Grandfather Late LalaJagatNarain was a renowned freedom fighter, a minister in the Punjab Government in the 1950’s and a Member of Parliament in 1960’s. A North Delhi road has been named after his great grandfather (LalaJagatNarainMarg). A postal stamp was also issued in 2013 to commemorate his life and contribution to the country.
PHILANTHROPY: The family has been involved in several social and charitable causes and have contributed and collected from readers of its newspapers, large contributions(exceedingRs 65crores) for social, national and humanitarian causes and distributed monetary and other benefits/items for the aid of thousands of terrorist victims and calamity struck families all over the country.
